Going to your first in-person yoga class can feel intimidating. Below are 5 tips from a yoga teacher who stepped into her first yoga class over 12 years ago!
- Sign-up in advance
Most studios and gyms will offer a way to sign-up for a yoga class at least 1-2 weeks in advance. If you are able, sign-up for a class to reserve your spot; this is especially important for busier times (such as evenings) when classes may fill up. Signing up for class in advance will also help keep you accountable and committed, especially if there are late cancel fees. - What to bring and what to wear to your first yoga class
If you own a yoga mat, bring it! Otherwise most studios and gyms will offer rental mats for a small fee or for no charge, especially if you are a new student. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in, something loose fitting or with a lot of stretch is best. If you have long hair, bring a hair tie or headband to keep it off of your face.
If you run hot or are taking a heated class, bring a face towel and even a larger towel to lay over your mat. There are towels specifically designed for yoga mats available, but a large microfiber towel will work just as well!
Lastly, bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during class. Allow yourself to take breaks as needed! - Show up at least 10-15 minutes early and let the teacher know that this is your first class
Arriving early allows time for you to get settled and familiar with the space. Let the instructor know that you are new so that they are aware and can provide you extra assistance during class. This will also let the teacher know they may need to explain things in a bit more detail or move a little slower in some parts of class.
The instructor or front desk staff may also give you a quick tour of the space and help you select yoga props needed for class. Getting there before the room gets too full also means you can also choose a spot with a good view of the yoga teacher so you can hear and see the poses better. - Listen to your body and avoid comparison
In yoga, you may be moving your body in ways you haven’t in a while which can bring up physical and even emotional feelings. Don’t be fooled, even classes labeled “restorative” or “gentle” can also feel intense in the body, especially if you are moving your body in a way you are not used to.
Remember that yoga is a personal practice and that every person is on a different step of their journey. Practice kindness towards yourself and others by avoiding comparison. However it is definitely okay to peek around the room to see what is going on! You may even feel inspired by a variation that someone else is doing in their practice knowing that this can be possible for you too!
Let go of the idea of “wrong” and “right” and focus on how your body and mind feel. Let yoga be a journey and remember that the core of the practice is turning your attention inwardly. Listen to how your body, mind, and breath feels that day and adjust accordingly; you may even discover something about yourself. - Hydrate and sign-up for another class!
Congratulate yourself for attending your first yoga class and trying something new! Yoga is a practice and the real benefits come from consistency. After class, carry that mindfulness along with you and take the time to nourish and hydrate your body. Then, sign-up for your next class!
If your first class did not feel like a good fit, do not be afraid to speak to the instructor afterwards. Ask any questions you may have, express your concerns, and see if they have another class or instructor they recommend for what you are looking for. A good yoga teacher will set their ego aside and go out of their way to help you find a class that suits your needs.
Hopefully these tips will help you to walk into your first in-person yoga class confident and ready to discover something new!
